TIP: So what makes Kinetic Recovery Ropes so much better than standard nylon straps?
Strength: Kinetic ropes have much high breaking strengths compared to their equal in nylon straps. You can get breaking strengths of 19K lbs to 25K lbs from a 3/4″ rope. This means a stronger, lighter strap. Easier to carry in your vehicle.
Longevity: Most kinetic ropes are made from materials with a much longer life than typical nylon straps. Not only do they wear less, they are more mold and rot resistant than nylon strap.
Safety: Kinetic ropes are not as likely to “fling” back when breaking or when their attachment point breaks. This severely decreases the chance of someone being hit when something lets loose.
Stretch: Kinetic ropes stretch. Most from 10-30% give. What this means, is less jerk when a vehicle is being pulled out. You can get a much faster running start and the stuck vehicle will not experience the blunt “bang” when the straps goes taught.
Weight: Kinetic rope weighs less than nylon strap. This also allows my kinetic ropes to float.
Price: While kinetic ropes are definitely more pricey than nylon straps, the added benefits, when compared with nylon recover straps, definitely make the switch worth it.
There are lots of kinetic ropes on the market. Some made from better materials and some not, so buyer beware.
The two most common types of kinetic rope are:
Nylon single braid (also know as 12 strand single). While these ropes tend to have higher breaking strength, they tend to not last as long as others. The strands tend to pull out easier.
Nylon double braid (also known as 12 strand double). While double braid, has slightly less breaking strength than single, the tighter braid is less likely to fray and has almost double the life expectancy of a single braid.
Coatings: Some rope is colored. There are two ways this is done. One is a dying process. This process is cheaper, but can weaken the rope 10-20%. Some ropes are coated, and while this is more expensive, it doesn’t not cause the rope to lose any strength.
Sheathing: Some ropes have sheathing to prevent wear on the eye splices (tow points) of the rope while other ropes are coated. A cordura sheath lets the rope slide better when on a pivot point
Chinese Vs American: In this case it pays to buy American. The ropes are made with stricter tolerances and better materials. Some kinetic ropes made in the US, still use foreign rope in their ropes, so make sure to look into this.
Vehicle weight: It is always better to buy a kinetic rope that is suited for your vehicle weight. Ropes with 19K# to 25K# are suitable for most Jeeps and smaller SUV’s. 3/4″ to 7/8″ kinetic ropes fall within this weight range. For larger trucks, 1″ to 1.25″ diameter ropes typically carry the weight range you would be looking for.
